Our team at Bathrooms of Charleston recently managed a specialized accessibility wet space installation in Mt. Pleasant, SC for a client in the historic Snee Farm neighborhood. Snee Farm is one of Mount Pleasant’s most beloved and established neighborhoods, offering mature oak trees, lush landscaping, and a charming blend of classic Lowcountry architecture. Conveniently located in central Mount Pleasant, while still feeling peaceful and tucked away. With spacious lots, scenic views, and a warm community feel, Snee Farm is the perfect place to call home. However, many of the homes here are 30-50 years old now and badly in need of updating. Here we transformed an outdated primary bathroom. We removed the giant and unused jacuzzi tub and replaced it with a modern walk in shower.
Designing an Accessibility Wet Space Installation in Mt. Pleasant, SC
Our design approach prioritized safety and visual continuity. We utilized a grey and white herringbone mosaic tile for the shower flooring. As seen in the project photos, this pattern is not only aesthetically pleasing but increases the grout surface area to improve slip resistance. This herringbone motif extends into the backing of the built-in wall niche, which features three distinct shelves for ample storage. The shower walls are clad in large-format porcelain with soft grey veining, designed to mimic the elegance of marble while offering the durability required for a high-traffic accessibility wet space installation in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Natural light from the existing window, which we outfitted with moisture-resistant white blinds, reflects off the polished wall tiles to brighten the space.
Fixtures and Features for Aging in Place
To support long-term independence, we installed a fold-down bench seat crafted from natural teak wood. This material resists moisture and provides a warm, stable surface for seating that can be retracted when not in use. We paired the seating area with a horizontal brushed nickel grab bar and placed a vertical bar at the entry for stability. The plumbing configuration features a handheld showerhead on a slide bar, allowing users to easily adjust the water height whether sitting or standing. Adjacent to the wet area, the vanity space includes matching brushed nickel accessories, such as the towel ring, set against fresh grey walls. By integrating these adaptive features, this accessibility wet space installation in Mt. Pleasant, SC provides a sustainable living solution that blends seamlessly with the home’s original character.
